YMCA Back Pack Buddies Collecting Funds
Published: Thursday, July 17, 2008, C-T
According to the USDA, our country is currently facing the largest food inflation in 20 years. That means: the cost of staples like milk and bread are up 14 percent. One dozen eggs cost $2.18 in mid-April of 2008 compared to $1.27 in 2007. One year ago you could buy more than two loaves of white Wonder sandwich bread for what you now pay for one loaf.
The food prices, in addition to the continued rise in fuel prices, are stretching family budgets to the breaking point. Many families are facing hunger now more than ever.
The Grand River Area Family YMCA and Second Harvest of Greater St. Joseph have partnered for a third year to ensure Chillicothe children will take something special home in their backpacks for the weekend—kid-friendly, single serve food that is low in sugar and high in vitamin C and calcium.
The Back Pack Buddies program is solely supported by the Chillicothe community. For less than $4 a weekend, a child is provided with meals for the weekend. For only $125 a child will receive these nutritious meals every weekend of the school year. The Grand River Area Family YMCA has set a goal of serving 75 children for the 2008-09 school years. July has been set as the official campaign month to collect funds before the coming school year.
